Begin by going through your closet and divide the items into four piles: keep, put in storage, donate, and throw away. The items in the "keep" pile should only consist of clothes you currently fit into and are appropriate for the season of the year.
From the keep pile, divide items further into different category. eg. all shoes together, all t shirts, all pants, all cardigans, all dresses, all tops, etc.
Based on what you have tidy in these piles, examine your current closet set up and space to see if you have the appropriate storage units to accommodate them. If not, purchase more dditional shelving units, racks, or hooks.
If possible, you can organized categories further by color. e.g all red shirts together, all black cardigans together, etc.
Remember the golden hanger rule: plastic is fantastic and wire is dire. Only hang your clothes on good, sturdy plastic hangers. If you have any wire hangers, please throw away them – they will only damage the shape of clothes in the long run. And remember: One Garment for One hanger.
Lastly is to maintain after organize. Do not let your efforts go to waste and be sure to keep your closet looking good by making effort to place the clothes back from where they belong.
